Indie Rock

Indie Rock is an extremely diverse music genre that originated from genres such as Alternative Rock, New Wave, Post-punk, Folk Rock and Garage Rock.

Indie Rock originated in the United Kingdom in the 1980's. These were usually low budget bands and artists with their own individual styles. The term indie refers to 'independant'

Originally, Indie Rock was associated with Alternative Rock, however this all changed in the 1990's when bands such as Nirvana became incredibly succesful and became mainstream. This widespread exposure and commercial chart success meant that Alternative Rock bands could no longer be regarded the same as Indie Rock bands as they did not pursue or achieve the amount of succes Alternative Rock bands did.

Many mainstream record labels do not usually sign Indie Rock bands as they are free to explore emotions, lyrical subjects and sounds that usually do not appeal to large, mainstream audiences. This is usually due to the fact that Indie Rock bands are not bothered by the profit as it is a personal taste.

This is American Authors. They are a growing band amongst the Indie Rock genre.

These are The 1975. They became popular in 2012 and are very famous in the Indie Rock scene.

Clothes

It is very difficult to generalise the clothes worn by indie rock artists as they are very individualistic. Even though the types of clothes worn are all very different, there are a few items of clothing that can be seen quite often, especially amongst the male artists. These include skinny jeans typically of black colouration. Leather jackets are all quite common as they can be worn witha  wide range of clothes. Plain tshirts which are sometimes oversized are also relatively popular. Females however wear more of a variety of clothing ranging from dresses to jeans or playsuits. Some artists, both male and female can dress in a down to earth manner while others like to be very different.

Hair

Hair styles in the Indie Rock genre are very much like clothes in the aspect that there is a great variety due to the individualistic traits of this genre, however recently trends have shown the increase of long messy hairstyles in male artists. Hairstyles can vary from messy, well-groomed, shaven, and curled in both male and female artists. This very much supports the individualistic view of the genre.

Body Art

Some artists have tattoos and some do not. It is quite common for both male and female Indie Rock artists to have peircings. These can range from very common ear lobe peircings to eyebrows, lips, nose or more intricate ear piercings and stretchers.
